Alice in Wonderland is a classic story that has been adapted for television, film, comics and various other mediums with each version a little different from the other. A film by Tim Burton is forthcoming out and a mini-series recently aired on the Syfy channel. Each project tells a sequel of sorts with the title character being an older version of original Alice. Alice in Wonderland is ripe for adapting in such a way because the story is fairly well known with the Disney version being the one that people are most familiar. I also believe that the book is in public domain, allowing people to use the characters without having to pay royalties to the estate of the original creator, Lewis Carroll. Even screenwriter John August has attempted to adapt the story several times. Several years ago, I even came up with an idea for an adaptation using the Alice mythos in a more contemporary setting, partially inspired after seeing the American McGee designs. Here is a sketch of Alice with the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, TwiddleDee, and TwiddleDum. Didn’t tackle the Mad Hatter yet but I think the Johnny Depp version is probably close to the design Burton would have conjured up if he had continued with the Batman franchise.

If I’m bored, I’ll quickly sketch a random face. After quickly drawing the top one, I realized the eyes were woefully misaligned and decided to redraw a good deal of it with the intention of modeling it after someone I met during the last film festival. I recently did the second sketch after coming across a photo of her. Quite a difference when you have a reference.
